物語冒頭、宏という日本兵が収容所からの脱走に成功する。
町の近くのアボリジナルの保護区に住むバンジョー・ウイリアムズが、脱走事件の翌朝、やっとのことで逃げこんできた宏を見つけ、保護区の仲間達と一緒に彼を匿うことを決める。バンジョーの長女メアリーは、この穏やかな話し方をする見知らぬ日本兵の世話をするうちに、彼に興味を持つようになってゆく。やがて二人は惹かれ合うようになり、結婚したらどんな暮らしになるだろうとそれぞれの想いを膨らませる。
しかし、いったいいつまで宏を内緒で匿い続けることができるのだろうか。そして二人の密かな結びつきの行方は・・？
